I have the honour to recommend that the

Colonial Secretary should be relieved of the payment of rent in respect of the house known as "Tanderagee", the

property of this Government, which is officially assigned

to him as a residence. At present he pays 6% of his salary

as rent for the house and an additional 1% as rent for

furniture. I propose that the rent for the furniture should continue to be paid, as is the general practice but that the 6% payment for the unfurnished house should no

longer be required.

As a good deal is expected in this Colony from the Colonial Secretary in the way of entertaining it

is necessary for him to have a large house and the upkeep

of "Tanderagee" is consequently expensive. The emoluments of the Colonial Secretary are somewhat on the low side but

I am averse from proposing an increase to his salary as

that would probably involve claims for increases from many

other officers. I should, however, be glad if you would

approve the alleviation which I now suggest.

I had intended to make this representation

before but did not do so because, if my original intention of leaving in June had been carried out, Sir Claud Severn
